MIFGS 2019

Developed as an exhibition garden for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (2019), “Breeze“ is a modern interpretation of a Palm Springs landscape. The arid conditions in Palm Springs are similar to those found in hot, dry Melbourne summers. The title refers to the permeable nature of the selected materials that allow air flow through the central courtyard and explores how the elements fundamentally influence our experiences in the landscape.

The aim of the design was to have a sense of enclosure which offers security and respite yet is still connected to the outside. The wall and pergola define the sitting area but enable visual access, inviting viewers into the space.

Bold forms used simply are a feature of this garden. The strong geometry created by the lines of rope and breeze blocks will also create interesting patterns of light and shade adding another dimension to this garden throughout the day. The minimalist layout and the soft colour palette give a feeling of calmness to the space. The outer area has a structured planting in juxtaposition with the inner courtyard which leans more towards a relaxed planting form that connects with people on an emotional level.

In general the design philosophy draws on the base design principles of balance, texture, form and scale to make this garden aesthetically pleasing.
